History
Sand Dollar started in 1987 as a silkscreen and embroidery company. We have specialized in customer service and quality apparel since our inception. Our market has been beach apparel, and also Hot Rod and Automotive theme screen printed shirts.
My husband had a Hot Rod ('34 Ford Coupe) and we loved going to the Car Shows. We are located in the San Diego area, so a common fashion statement is the Aloha-look cotton shirt. And for the "Car Guy", he likes the same shirt but with car prints. We attempted to buy this type of design from many of the large shirt manufacturers, but they didn’t seem to cater to that market. So, I started sewing my husband's Aloha shirts from fabric I purchased in local yardage stores. My Mom had taught me to sew when I was 5 years old (I am much older now). She was a perfectionist as to the detail of apparel construction. Mom taught me to never cut corners on quality of goods or the sewing supplies you use.
Friends and customers saw the shirts I had made and kept asking me if I would sew shirts just like my husband's for them. So one by one, the orders came in, until it grew too large for me to be able to do by myself.
One bleary morning, after another evening of sewing all night, I decided there had to be a better way to do this. I started to explore what the large apparel companies do to increase production. I now have a combination of what I call home, custom sewing and commercial production. I buy fabric in bulk and cut in quantities of at least 100 shirts at a time in a certain print. Then, I (with the gals I hire) sit down and start sewing, the old fashioned way.
I still have the same attention to detail as when I was sewing only for my family. I keep that in mind with each shirt. I am proud of my product and want you to look your best in this shirt. I have hundreds of satisfied customers who look forward to my latest print being ready for them to buy.
